Description
Benefits Manager is responsible for administration of employee benefits in all company operations. As needed, this position provides guidance and assistance on various employee benefit and leave plans. The Benefits Manager surveys industry and/or the community to determine company's competitive position in employee benefits. This position develops, recommends and installs approved, new or modified plans and employee benefits policies and supervises administration of existing plans.  The Benefits Manager develops wellness plans to improve employee well-being and reduce claim costs.

Responsibilities

  • Administer employee benefits programs such as medical, dental, vision plans; life insurance plans; short and long term disability programs; wellness programs and the company 401k program.

  • Evaluate and compare existing company benefits with those of other employers by analyzing other plans, surveys and other sources of information. Plan, develop and/or participate in area and industry surveys. 

  • Participate in annual benefit renewal meetings and assist to develop specifications for new plans or modify existing plans .

  • Install approved new plans or changes to existing plans by preparing announcement materials, plan summary documents and communications for employees.

  • Conduct employee meetings and arrange for open enrollment. 

  • Assure company compliance with provisions of Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Supervise preparation of reports and applications required by law to be filed with federal and state agencies, such as Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, insurance commissioners, and other regulatory agencies. Review and analyze changes to state and federal laws pertaining to benefits, and report necessary or suggested changes to management. 

  • Develop benefits information, statistical and census data for actuaries, insurance carriers and management.

  • Handle benefits inquiries and complaints to ensure quick, equitable, courteous resolution. Maintain contact in person, and by phone or mail, with hospitals, physicians, insurance companies, employees, and beneficiaries to facilitate proper and complete utilization of benefits for all employees.

  • Supervise maintenance of enrollment and claims records for all benefits plans.

  • Manage length of service award program.

Builds effective business partnerships with management by developing a solid understanding of the business, and by seeking to develop and/or recommend Human Resources solutions that balance employee needs with departmental goals

Supports corporate HR Management with administration of various projects and policy/procedure implementation and changes

Reports directly to VP Human Resources and is a member of the HR Management team and manages the Benefits Specialist while acting as back up for leave administration for FMLA and ADA.

Must have strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel.  Oracle Fusion knowledge is a strong, plus. 

Support HR Management to successfully address complex employee relations and performance issues by conducting, creating and maintaining appropriate documentation, organizing information and making recommendations regarding course of action

Stays current with HR related regulations and acceptable practices

Utilizes tools, systems & resources effectively in order to analyze employee data, develop solutions and provide support to meet internal customer needs that ensure strong cross-functional communication. This includes but is not limited to Benefits, Compensation, and systems such as applicant tracking, time off/absence, HRIS, and other HR related systems used to facilitate job accountabilities

Education & Experience

This position requires a bachelor degree in Human Resources Management, business or related field and five (5) years in benefits administration.  A master’s degree in Human Resource Management preferred and/or equivalent experience with appropriate certifications may be considered.

A minimum of 7 years professional Human Resources experience is required, including 3 years managing employee leave of absences.

A minimum of 3 years managing Human Resources staff required.

Certifications

One of the following certifications are required: 

  • HRCI Senior Human Resource Professional (SPHR)

  • HRCI Professional Human Resource (PHR)

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)

  • Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)

  • (CEBS) Certified Employee Benefit Specialist certification desired. 

Skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation

  • Strong knowledge of HR regulations and practices, specifically benefits, FMLA, ADA administration.

  • Strong training, analytical and organizational skills, process focused and attention to detail

  • Sound judgment, demonstrate problem solving abilities, decisiveness and flexibility

  • Strong time-management and prioritization skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • PC experience in a Microsoft Windows environment, proficient with internet email, Word, Excel, Outlook and other software. Strong Excel skills required. Ability to effectively learn and manage various systems used in an HR environment

  • Regular attendance at work is an essential part of the job.  Other duties as assigned
